A Little Bit About Me

Welcome to my preaching blog! My name is Matt Mardis-LeCroy and I serve as Executive Associate Minister at Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ in Des Moines. I am also a Doctor of Ministry student at Chicago Theological Seminary. This blog compiles the sermons, reflection papers and sundry materials documenting the work that I am doing.

This Little Light

Strictly speaking, this sermon was not preached for my D.Min program (which is why I don't have any video). But it was one of the best received sermons I have ever preached at Plymouth, and I think I owe that, in large part, to the work I have been doing this year. This sermon is my attempt to put some key learnings into practice, including:
  1. Trying to do less telling and more showing (as was suggested to me by a very wise man).
  2. Focusing less on commenting on the text and more on performing the text, i.e., doing what the text does, along the lines suggested by Cosgrove and Edgerton.
  3. Taking a stab at Fred Craddock's method which, I must confess, has always eluded me. But I think this may be a fairly decent attempt.
The sermon, entitled "This Little Light" was preached at Plymouth Church on Sunday, February 6. It was based on Matthew 5:13-20. You can read the manuscript here and download the sermon here (click on the link, then click again where it says "download." The sermon begins at about the 5:45 mark, but we sure to listen to the fabulous music of Plymouth Church's Chancel Choir).
